Those who tuned into Top Gear last night (March 8th) may have been impressed by the car as Richard Hammond took it for a spin. He was clearly impressed, saying that it’s the best lightweight car available for the amount of money that you pay for it.

Indeed, the Mazda MX-5 has long been a popular car because of its ability to thrill drivers on a low budget and has earned the Guinness World Record title of “Best-Selling Two-Seater Sports Car in the World“.

It was released for the first time in 1989 and helped to revive the market for affordable lightweight sports cars. In its time, it has gained close to 200 awards and the number of units it has shifted surpassed 950,000 during January 2015.

The motto for the development of the latest version of the car is “innovate in order to preserve” and the team at Mazda aimed to ensure the new model was as fun as previous incarnations, while continuing to meet increasing safety and efficiency requirements.

European customers will be able to choose between two ultra-efficient petrol engines, which deliver 131 PS and 160 PS.

This car has the lowest centre of gravity that has been seen on any MX-5 yet and has an interior that is people-oriented and optimised for driving when the top is down. It is available with an MZD Connect infotainment system as well as a range of i-ACTIVSENSE active and pre-crash safety technology.

The new MX-5 is currently rolling off the assembly line at Ujina Plant No.1 in Hiroshima and will be going to the domestic market first, with sales scheduled to begin in June. This car will also be rolled out to other regions progressively and will arrive in the UK in the summer.
