Vauxhall is set to unveil its latest hot hatch, the ultra-powerful Corsa VXR, when the 2015 Geneva Motor Show gets underway in March.
The so-called New Corsa has already seen plenty of changes to its technology, its styling’s both externally and internally and also to its chassis. These have been carried over to the new VXR, which promises to “raise the bar for small, fast hatchbacks”.
In terms of performance, the VXR can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 143 mph. What’s more, it gets 245 Nm of torque at lower revs than the outgoing Nurburgring and ClubSport models can. The VXR gets this from between 1,900 rpm and 5,800 rpm, while the outgoing cars get it between 2,250 rpm and 5,500 rpm.
With an overboost facility, the Corsa VXR can get a further 35 Nm of torque, which is useful for overtaking swiftly and safely. It is powered by a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine that provides 205 PS of power. The Corsa VXR also gets 37.7 mpg on the combined cycle and its carbon dioxide emissions sit at 174 g/km.
Power is delivered to the car’s front wheels through six-speed transmission that allows for short gear changes that are fluid.
For the first time, the Corsa VXR sees Vauxhall offering a two-stage switchable electronic stability programme (ESP) and traction control. When in Competition Mode, the ESP is relaxed and the traction is made inactive. When the Corsa VXR is taken out for track days, the ESP can be disabled fully.
Frequency Selective Damping has also been developed for the Corsa VXR, with Vauxhall having worked with damper-supplier Koni to make the technology possible. This allows damping forces to be adapted according to the car’s movements and can ensure that body control can be maintained when the car is driven fast. Even so, drivers can still enjoy an optimum ride when the car is being driven at lower speeds.
Another thing that changes the driving experience in the Corsa VXR is that the ride height has been lowered all around the vehicle by ten millimetres.
The Corsa VXR promises more direct and precise steering too as revisions have been made and feedback through the wheel has been improved. As standard, Michelin 215/45 R17 tyres are fitted as well as 308 mm front brake discs.
To give the Corsa VXR a more personal touch and help it stand out, customers get the choice of six exterior colours, such as the unique Flash Blue.
Bi-xenon lighting is fitted as standard and the car has a more aggressive-looking front-end design that features large air intakes as well as an aluminium-framed opening under the headlights. To help improve performance, the Corsa VXR has a small scoop located below the bonnet as well as side-sill extensions. The car also has a rear spoiler to provide downforce. as well as twin Remus exhaust pipes to distinguish it from regular Corsas.
