Porsche Boxster named What Car? Sports Car of the Year

This year’s winner of the prestigious What Car? Sports Car of the Year title is the Porsche Boxster.

A gala awards ceremony was held in London yesterday (January 9th) evening and saw the Boxster come out on top in this highly competitive category.

Chas Hallett, editor-in-chief of What Car?, commented: “The Porsche Boxster is simply brilliant in every way – it’ll cope with the greyness of mid-winter commutes and it’ll feel great when the road opens up and the roof comes down on summer evenings. It’s also a relative bargain and won’t cost too much to run.”

Featuring an all-new lightweight chassis and longer wheelbase, the 2013 model has a widened track on the front and rear axles to aid handling. It is 35 kg lighter than previous versions and this, coupled with the vehicles 2.7-litre mid-mounted, flat-six engine, ensures the car delivers excellent performance and 265 bhp.

This provides the vehicle with some highly impressive statistics, including acceleration from zero to 62 mph in just 5.5 seconds, while the model’s low emissions of just 180 g/km of CO2 place the vehicle in Band I for Vehicle Excise Duty.

Costing from £37,589, the new Boxster is an affordable super car and will surely have the pulses racing for sports car fans lucky enough to purchase one in the coming years.

Last month, the performance vehicle manufacturer also announced the launch of its new 911 GT3 Cup model, which will be taking part in this year’s Le Mans 24-hour race, as well as the upcoming sports car World Endurance Championship.

Wolfgang Hatz, Porsche AG board of management member for research and development, said the vehicle will be entering production by mid-2013 and will aim to build on the manufacturer’s fine performance in 2011, when the GT3 R achieved 41 wins from 131 starts in all competitions.
