Vehicle manufacturer Renault has unveiled a stunning new concept car to mark the 50th anniversary of the Alpine Berlinette A 110.

The Alpine A 110-50 will bring the styling of the original A 110 bang into the 21st century, with the full carbon fibre bodywork painted in traditional alpine blue harking back to the ancestry and prestige of the vehicle's predecessors.

A victorious rally car predominantly in the early 1970s, the A 110 was the car to beat in the 1971 Monte Carlo Rally and won numerous other titles that year and the next.

Over the years the A 110 saw 11 incarnations in total, with the last ending its production run in 1978.

Now in 2012, the A110-50 has been developed by Renault Sport Technologies and benefits from the experience gained by engineers in delivering this year's Megane Trophy rally car.

It features a 3.5-litre 24-valve 400 hp V6 engine mounted at the rear for improved performance, balance and road handling. Furthermore, the vehicle uses the carbon air intake from the Megane V6 Trophy car, meaning optimum power can be delivered at all speeds.

Furthermore, a Formula One-style transmission and semi-automatic, sequential gearbox means drivers will have ultimate responsiveness and performance at their fingertips when behind the wheel of the new A 110-50.

"Developing this concept car was a great adventure. It was a catalyst for creativity," commented Axel Breun, concept and show car director at Renault.

"We wanted to make a Berlinette that was of our time and which boldly embodies Renault's passion for motorsport. We were guided by our hearts and emotions."

Laurens van den Acker, senior vice president for corporate design at the manufacturer, added: "For everybody on the team, it was a dream come true to work on an Alpine concept car. We wanted to put this car firmly in the modern day, while resonating with its heritage."
