McLaren has highlighted the technical innovation and drive for excellence that led the company in the development of its new MP4-12C model.

One of the most anticipated sports cars of the year, the MP4-12C features an array of new technologies for a road vehicle – many of which have been tested in the strenuous world of Formula 1.

Innovations including the use of magnesium in place of steel for some components have helped the new incarnation of the vehicle to shed considerable weight in comparison to its predecessor, while drive-train enhancements and an upping of the engine's power to 625 bhp as standard have helped boost performance.

The McLaren M838T 3.8-litre V8, twin-turbo engine is the power station of this awesome vehicle, but its sophisticated Formula 1 components help to deliver extremely refined performance, including the innovative steer-braking system to improve handling in fast corners, whereby the inner wheel is braked slightly by onboard computers to reduce under-steer.

Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive managing director, said: "We designed and engineered the 12C from a clean sheet of paper and I am delighted with the innovative technology package created for our first sports car.

"Our customers love driving a car with technologies and systems that have proved successful in Formula 1 and which create an incredible driving experience in a unique new high performance sports car."

He added that given the racing heritage of the marque, it is in the company's nature to continually seek out improvements in their vehicles and this latest model is no exception.

Prices for the new MP4-12C start from £176,000 and the vehicle is now available to order for UK buyers. Meanwhile, anyone willing to fork out for their own vehicle is being offered complementary upgrades to their package, including an additional 25 bhp tuning of the McLaren's already ferocious engine.
