BMW has unveiled its new i8 roadster concept in front of the eager crowds of the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Due for launch in 2013, the new i8 coupe has been highlighted as one of the most hotly anticipated vehicles of the coming months, with the concept roadster version equally stunning and stylish to behold.

A strict two-seater unlike the 2+2 coupe, the new roadster is to offer sleek lines and impressive performance of zero to 62 mph in just 4.6 seconds, while BMW’s famous 50/50 front-rear weight distribution helps to maintain excellent front-end grip and handling.

It will utilise the innovative drivetrain of the i8 coupe – a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine powering the rear wheels, supplemented by an electric motor delivering the equivalent of 134 bhp through the front axle.

This means the new i8 roadster develops a total of 354 bhp and will be able to achieve a limited top speed of 155 mph. However, the onboard electric engine significantly improves fuel efficiency for the vehicle, meaning this is a car that is capable of speeds of in excess of 150 mph, but which delivers on average 104 mpg.

As a result, the i8 roadster is to be a standout exhibit at the LA Auto Show, with the event currently taking place and running until December 9th at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

It is also the stage for Bentley’s latest concept design the Continental GT3, with the vehicle set to mark the return of the marque to the world of motorsport in the coming years.

Based on the chassis of the popular GT Speed model, the 205-mph GT3 will be designed specifically for the track and is set feature acceleration of zero to 62 mph in just four seconds, and also offer an array of driver aids, including improved transmission and computer control systems to boost handling and responsiveness.
