Number 1 will shock you! Just kidding, we all knew it was a popular car, just not that popular.
Auto Trader, everyone’s favourite online vehicle marketplace, has revealed which cars were viewed the most on their site in 2019, as well as various other interesting statistics.
Although this doesn’t tell us which cars were the most successful in terms of sales or which cars dominated the roads in 2019, what it does do is give us an insight into the interests of consumers last year.
Now, bear in mind that Auto Trader sells new cars as well as used cars so this should, in fact, be a fairly decent insight into the UK’s genuine buying behaviours.
Behold, Auto Trader’s top 10 for most viewed cars of 2019:
- Volkswagen Golf
- Ford Focus
- Ford Fiesta
- Range Rover
- Range Rover Sport
- BMW 3 Series
- Mercedes-Benz A-Class
- Range Rover Evoque
- Volkswagen Polo
- Mercedes-Benz C Class

Now, this may look like a standard list, but there are some interesting things to be taken away from this. First of all, have you noticed that there are three Range Rovers on this list? Land Rover’s Range Rover has successfully made a name for itself as the luxury SUV to aim for and the list domination seems to back that up.
Also, because Land Rover’s Range Rovers are selfishly hogging three spaces on the list, there seems to be a lot of missing big names. For instance, it’s surprising that Audi is the only one from the big three luxury German manufacturers to not make it onto the list. Even more interestingly, Audi was named 2019’s most desirable new car brand by Auto Trader as Audis were searched for 4.8 million times on the site, which was apparently 800,000 more than BMW received.
Other huge brand names such as Toyota, Nissan, Vauxhall, Mini, Peugeot and so on also didn’t make the list. With Toyota being the world’s biggest car manufacturer, we would have thought perhaps the Aygo would have made it on there.
The Golf is, after all, one of the most highly-rated hatchbacks around but we never would have thought it to be even more popular than the Ford Fiesta or Focus. We would put it down the reputation of the monstrous VW Golf R, the AWD, performance model of the standard Golf. This pocket rocket has gained some serious street cred in the hot hatch community and also offers something that the Fiesta and Corsa don’t and that’s the illusion of ‘German engineering’.
Auto Trader has also drawn from their data that interest in new electric cars has also grown throughout 2019. So much so that interest for them is now beginning to overtake interest in petrol-hybrid cars, likely partly thanks to the release of the Audi E-Tron, Tesla Model 3 and the great success of the Jaguar I-Pace. All three of them are incredible luxury offerings, helping to improve the image of the electric car and helping people understand that they’re not all ugly!
Rory Reid from Auto Trader had this to say: “The most popular electric cars are consistently outscoring petrol hybrids for desirability in the eco ranges, suggesting a change in the nation’s tastes for more environmentally friendly cars and the impact of a wider roll out for charging points. For example, the top-scoring electric model, the Audi E-Tron, gained 7% more interest than the top petrol hybrid, the Toyota Corolla.”
The Audi E-Tron was actually the most popular electric model of 2019 according to Auto Trader, proving that its launch was a great success and that it’s the electric SUV to go for.
Thanks to the data, we now also know that black is the most popular colour for those looking around on Auto Trader, with 21% of ad viewings being for black cars. Closely behind in second place, blue cars made up 19% of the ad views and silver was in third making up 16%. Let’s just hope that the new, first-time black car owners of 2019 know how to wash their cars without creating swirl marks because boy are they in for a surprise.
