Lotus first attempt at an electric supercar, The Evija (pronounce the ‘j’ as a ‘y’) isn’t a bad effort.
The new Lotus Evija EV is a 1,972bhp hypercar capable of a 0-62mph in less than 3 seconds with a top speed of 185mph in less than 9 seconds. Actually, it’s a pretty impressive effort.
Such electric power won’t come cheap of course, as each of these 130 limited edition models is set to cost a cool £2.4 million.
Evija – Codename Type 130
The Type 130, as it was initially called, first appeared on our collective radars in July 2019, with high-speed testing following in November as well as a debut showing at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China (Geely part-owns Lotus).
Lotus is not quite done with testing yet though, with a further good few thousand more miles due as well as testing on the Lotus track back home in Hethel.
Lotus Evija – World’s First All-electric British Supercar
The Lotus Evija is being touted as the world’s first all-electric British supercar – Evija means ‘first in existence’ – with a top speed of more than 200mph, and a planned output of 1,254lb ft torque which will make it potentially the most powerful production road car in existence.
At just 1,680kg the Evija is also likely to be the lightest electric hypercar too, thanks to an ultra-lightweight carbon monocoque. It’s also the first new hand-built product to come out of Hethel in more than 10 years.
Formula E Science By Williams Advanced Engineering
What about all that power? Lotus called in Williams Advanced Engineering to help engineer the Evija and to add a chunk of all that Formula E experience and science to the powertrain, where four electric motors dedicated to each wheel transfers the power to the road from a centrally mounted lithium-ion battery pack.
One major issue so far with high-performance electric cars has been the strain placed on the battery, often limiting range drastically compared to your more practical and sober family EV variety.
Not so with the Lotus Evija, which proudly boasts a potential range of around 250 miles. Not bad, though this will decrease depending on road surface and how the Evija is driven of course.
The Lotus Evija also boasts the world’s first main/dipped mean laser lighting technology and comprehensive bespoke personalisation options for customers too – I should think so at £2.4 million.
The Evija certainly heralds a new and exciting future for Lotus, and we can surely expect to see trickle-down Evija technology filter throughout the Lotus range over the next few months and years.
If Christmas hasn’t taken its toll on your bank account and you want to become part of the 130-strong elite, then a £250,000 deposit will secure production of your Lotus Evija, which should be delivered some time in 2020.
