Citroen’s luxury sub-brand has revealed a stunning new luxury saloon

Forget about getting a BMW 3 Series or a C-Class Mercedes, set your eyes on the new luxury DS 9. Citroen are going back to their roots of making stunning and highly advanced luxury cars, just as they once did in the 1950s with the original Citroen DS.

This new DS seems to live up to the old legacy as it’s kitted out with an advanced hybrid drivetrain, a very spacious and luxurious interior and cool features such as Active Scan (more on this in a second).

Firstly, the new DS 9 has a truly elegant style to it, completely segregating itself from the main Citroen brand’s usual aesthetic. When we eventually have the pleasure of seeing this large, lavish limo in person, I’m certain that no one is going to be pointing at it and saying ‘look at that Citroen!’.

Sitting at 4.93 metres long and 1.85 metres wide, the DS 9 is about as big as a BMW 5 Series, so it’s not quite land-yacht size, but it’s not a small saloon either. With a slanted fastback-style rear and an aggressive-yet-luxurious face featuring a ‘diamond’ mesh, this French saloon is a serious contender for the luxury saloon market.

On the inside, things get more interesting. Using a clever new architecture and a rather long wheelbase, the DS 9 maximises interior space for rear passengers making the car feel more limo-like when compared to the equivalent competitors. The seats (which are also heated, cooled and have massaging functions for the front seats) are truly exquisite and ultra-modern, with a ‘watchstrap design’ and the dash, along with a big portion of the rest of the interior, is covered in Nappa Leather.

Where the original Citroen DS saloon was well-known for its hydropneumatic suspension, this new DS 9 is known for a cool quirk of its own. Active Scan Suspension uses an in-built camera to scan the road ahead and uses that information to adjust suspension accordingly. The damping of each wheel is prepared to ensure the smoothest possible ride, possibly even smoother than you would get in a Rolls Royce. In Citroen’s official press release, the French automaker states the DS 9 “provides ride comfort without equal”.

The car also comes with Level 2 semi-autonomous driving which will help maintain the car’s speed and direction without driver intervention.

All in all, the DS 9 is ridiculously cool and if the price rumours are anything to go by (starting at around £30,000) then this really will have the big wigs at BMW, Audi and Mercedes sweating.
