Thanks to more efficient tyres, the little Zoe set a new hypermiling record of 475 miles driven on a single charge!
The Renault Zoe is one of the most popular electric cars available thanks to its low price. Although it may be one of the smallest and cheapest EVs available, Renault have proven it to be a very capable machine once again with a new record for distance travelled on a single charge.
As standard, the Renault Zoe E-Tech has a WLTP range of 245 miles which will likely translate to around 200 miles in real life. However, with the aid of more efficient, range-extending tyres and the dedicated patience of a driver, the Zoe’s range was able to be stretched to almost double its WLTP rated range.
The record was beaten at Thruxton Race Circuit over the course of 30 hours of straight, non-stop motion. This was necessary because the optimum speed of EVs is generally quite low due to the nature of batteries, so the car was driving at an average speed of around 19 mph.
The previous record for longest distance driving in a Renault Zoe on a single charge stood at 351 miles and was set in 2018 in France. Now, just this week on June 11, the team at Mission Motorsport were able to extend the Renault Zoe’s range even further with the use of ENSO range-extending tyres.
Two identical Zoe’s were supplied by Hendy Renault, with one achieving 424.7 miles in over 22 hours of driving and the record-breaking car achieving 475.4 miles driven, starting at 9:40 am on Wednesday and ending at 14:45 pm on Thursday.
Making this achievement even more joyous is the fact that Mission Motorsport is a charity that aids in the recovery of those who have been affected by Military Operations by providing opportunities through motorsport. Congratulating the team, Tom Barker, Electrification Manager at Renault UK, said the following:
“What Mission Motorsport has achieved is incredible and everyone at Renault UK sends a huge well done to them. Not only is it testament to how far it’s possible to go on a single charge in a Zoe, even taking into consideration the optimum conditions and lowly speed, but it’s a great illustration of just how comfortable and usable it is, too. There’s no doubt this was pretty extreme, but it’s further evidence that the Renault Zoe really does go the extra mile when it comes to viably being a household’s only car and that it’s suitable for covering all kinds of distance.”
We don’t know what’s more impressive, the range achieved by a fairly budget-end EV or the dedication of the team that saw a Zoe drive 19 mph for over 24 hours straight! Let us know what you think, in the comments!
