New versions of the Audi RS 6 Avant and RS 7 Sportback are set to bring the German brand even closer to supercar performance while recording best-in-class economy.
These new ‘Performance’ labelled models from Audi feature an uprated 4.0-litre TFSI engine that boasts an output of 597bhp, while torque climbs to an impressive 700Nm.
Not only this, but drivers will be able to get an extra 50Nm of torque out of the engine thanks to the new models’ overboost function, taking its overall capability to 750Nm.
Their new output advantages see the RS badge capable of doing the 0-60mph sprint in a time of just 3.7 seconds, an improvement of 0.2 seconds over earlier RS models.
Similarly the new versions need just 12.1 seconds to complete a 0-124mph sprint, marking a 1.4-second improvement. For those inclined, a dynamic package plus can be specified, which sees the models’ 155mph top speed raise to 189mph.
Despite reaching breakneck speeds, Audi has left the devil in the detail and the new models retain the same economy as their ‘standard’ model versions.
The V8 biturbo power unit returns up to 29.4mpg in the RS 6 Avant performance and 29.7mpg in the RS 7 Sportback performance.
Overall, this corresponds to 223g/km and 221g/km of CO2 emissions in each model respectively.
The standard eight-speed tiptronic transmission has been designed to maximise the potential of the extreme engine in both new performance models.
Drivers can choose between the modes D and S, or change gears manually by tapping the selector lever or using the shift paddles on the RS multifunction sport leather steering wheel.
Audi’s quattro permanent all-wheel drive delivers the power to the road and distributes powerful torque via the centre differential.
The standard RS adaptive air suspension has been lowered on the new performance models, meanwhile the RS sports suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control is an optional extra for a tauter feel.
Not forgetting aesthetics, the RS performance-specific exterior features a quattro logo and RS super sports seats, finished with black and blue Alcantara and leather upholstery.
The RS 6 Avant performance is priced at £86,000 OTR and the RS 7 Sportback performance comes in at £91,000 OTR.
Both models will be available to order from November, with first deliveries scheduled for February 2016.
