Audi has made a new addition to its range of SUVs in the form of the Q4, although it will be a couple of years before you see one on the road.
The Q4, which is set to hit showrooms in 2019, is a crossover model which Audi hopes will tempt customers away from the likes of the Mercedes GLC Coupe, BMW X4 and Range Rover Evoque.
It has been a long time in the making, as the model is essentially a refined version of the TT Offroad concept the German marque unveiled in Beijing in 2014.
One reason why the model has taken so long to surface may be down to a legal dispute with Fiat Chrysler, which had trademarked Q4, along with Q2 as names for transmission systems. This all seems to have been sorted out by the lawyers as the Audi Q2 has been on the market for a few months, and the Q4 is now set to follow suit.
Details on the Q4 are thin on the ground at present, but logic dictates that it will be bigger than the Q2 – the smallest SUV in Audi’s range – and Q3, but more compact than the Q5.
What Car reports the model will come with a new generation of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engine options, as well as a plug-in hybrid model later down the line.
The Q5 itself has recently been given a facelift by Audi, giving some clues as to the technology and styling that could be found on its smaller brother. Inductive smartphone charging, a large screen for navigation and infotainment and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit – a digital instrument cluster first seen on the new generation TT – are all likely to be present, although some may be optional extras.
