For a hulking luxurious S class, this car is pretty fast!
Not only is the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ one of the coolest, sleekest and most luxurious large coupes around but now, it’s also the fastest. Well, around the Nürburgring at least.
The 2021 model of the GT 63 S has officially bee crowned as the fastest in its class around the famous Green Hell. Clocking a time of just 7:27,800 min set by driver and AMG development engineer, Demian Schaffert.
The previous record for the car, set in 2018, was beaten by 2.3 seconds thanks to newly tuned elastokinematics and other fine-tuning such as the aero package that improves stability at high speeds and reduces drag.
After losing the title just 3 months prior, the record has been reclaimed once again by the GT 63 S. The 639 hp land missile was equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2, which are an available option to customers, active rear-axle steering, a rear-axle limited-slip differential and of course the advanced AMG Performance 4MATIC+ AWD system.
To put this highly-impressive time for 7:27 minutes into perspective, note that the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ beat the McLaren MP4-12C (7:28.0), Lamborghini Huracán LP610-4 (7:28.0), 2009 Nissan GT-R (7:29.03) and the Audi R8 V10 Plus (7:32).
The driver and AMG development engineer, Demian Schaffert, said “Even though I’ve been accompanying our GT 63 through its development for several years now, it’s always impressive to see the wide spread we have been able to achieve with this exclusive vehicle. This is especially true after the recent slight revision. On the one hand, the four-door coupé is comfortable and equipped with many intelligent safety features for everyday driving, and on the other hand it offers this extremely high level of driving dynamics and precision, which we have now been able to demonstrate once again on the demanding Nordschleife,”
It’s also worth noting that this rather large and luxurious super-coupe had to complete the laps in conditions that were ‘anything but optimal’ with several sections having wet spots.
