Team Brit Unveils New Car

You may remember back in August we done an article on the inspirational Team Brit as they took on the mighty Silverstone 24 hour race.

If you’re unfamiliar with Team Brit, they are team of ex and serving members of the Armed Forces with physical and mental injuries. But with the help of motorsport they are competing against able bodied drivers in the toughest endurance races across the world, with an ultimate goal to become the first all disabled team to enter the 24 hours of Le Mans.

We also mentioned their upcoming plans to enter the Fun Cup series with the help of our friends at Grove & Dean Motorsport as a sponsor in the near future, and yesterday they unveiled their new cars and the funky livery along with their new team of drivers. So let’s meet the new team and look at what their plans are for the future.

Meet the team

Warren McKinlay

Age 35

Former recovery mechanic in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers

Warren joined the army as a 19 year old and was involved in an unfortunate motorbike accident in 2005. He suffered a broken back, pelvis and serious brain injury, which led to Warren being diagnosed with Cotard’s Syndrome, also known as the ‘walking corpse syndrome’, meaning Warren believed he was dead.

After a long period of treatments, Warren was able to open his own business and joined Team Brit which has led to him finding his competitive drive.

Jimmy Hill

Age 34

Serving Royal Marines corporal

Whilst serving in Afghanistan in 2013, Jimmy was hit seven times by machine gun bullets from which he has suffered a semi-paralysed ‘dropped’ foot.

Jimmy joined Team Brit in November of last year, having enjoyed motorsport before his injuries and still serving as a corporal for the Royal Marines.

Tony Williams

Age 32

Former Corporal – Queen Alexandra Royal Army Nursing Corps

Tony survived two grenade blasts, as well as being shot six times while serving in Afghanistan in 2010. He suffered a number of major injuries including broken spine and hip, and was told he was unlikely to walk again or father children.

Tony has paralysis in his left leg and a ‘dropped’ foot, however he can walk and is a proud father of two children.

He also has endurance racing experience, from taking part in a number of 24 hour races, including the British and the Le Mans of Majorca and is a key part of the team.

Andy Searle

Age 24

Former rifleman in the Rifles Regiment.

Andy is the youngest and the newest member of the team at the age of 24. In 2011 Andy was injured by an IED whilst also serving in Afghanistan. The blast meant Andy lost both of his legs, as well as part of his hip and two fingers.

After five years of rehabilitation and treatments, Andy, a very keen petrol-head who’s passionate about motorsport accepted Team Brit’s invitation to join the team.

Future of Team Brit

The Team will enter 2 cars (#158 and #312) into the upcoming Fun Cup series with all 4 drivers and it’ll take place at Silverstone in April. The series also includes the gruelling 25 hour race at Spa in July.

Le Mans remains to be the team’s ultimate aim and they will be hoping they can gain the necessary experience required from the Fun Cup for the intensity of Le Mans.
