Overengineered, overpowered and certainly not undervalued Lancer Evo sells for a record-beating price.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI is certainly well-appreciated by JDM and rally enthusiasts alike but would anyone pay over £100k for one? The answer is yes.

On 30 April 2021, the UK Mitsubishi Motors heritage auction ended with the sale of one Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Mäkinen Edition for the price of £100,100.

This is the largest amount a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution has ever sold for, beating the previous auction record of around £99,000 which was for a delivery-mileage Evo IX sold in the US in 2017. Of the 15 heritage cars sold on the day, this special edition Lancer Evo made up over ⅕ of the sales total of £479,500.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI TME is extremely well-regarded and is said to defy the typical convention of increasing the price of a standard edition model with no other additions other than a fancy name. This special edition Evo comes with plenty of extras, so much so that it’s earned the nickname of ‘Evo 6.5’.

The name alone holds a lot of weight as Mäkinen is famous for winning the championship four years in a row starting in 1996 until 1999. Only 2500 were produced, each featuring a range of exclusive features and modifications including 10mm lower ride height, improved steering rack, modified turbocharger with titanium alloy turbine wheel, improved AWD system with Active Yaw Control, altered gear ratios, Recaro seats, Momo steering wheel and more.

As a sum of all its parts, the Evo TME represented a religious experience to WRC fans and the fully-optimised mechanical DNA of this over-engineered machine comes from the fact that it is not a road car but rather, a rally car that has been made road legal.

All in all, it’s a very special machine and the new owner of this is likely to only see the value of it rise over the years.
