A bespoke driver programme has been confirmed for the new McLaren P1 GTR, which will offer each participant a slightly different taste of the new vehicle.
The McLaren P1 GTR is the most powerful track-only model that the marque has produced so far and is currently facing dynamic testing at a number of international race circuits. Images so far show trials of the latest cooling and aerodynamic updates. Meanwhile, the driver cockpit has shown to be more purposeful than its road-going equivalent, designed with driver engagement, weight saving, comfort and safety in mind.
Those who take part in the driver programme will get to experience the technologies and expertise from within the McLaren Technology centre and a look at the interior of the McLaren P1 GTR, for which images have only just been released.
To ensure weight is kept at a minimum, all but the essential items have been stripped out of the car. It has a lightweight carbon fibre MonoCage chassis, which was used in the road-going version, and weighs a mere 90 kg including upper and lower structures, roof snorkel, engine air intake cavity, battery and power electronics housing. What’s more, the rollcage is incorporated into the MonoCage so that there is no reduction in headroom for the driver.
Chief test driver for McLaren Automotive Chris Goodwin said: “With the McLaren P1 GTR driver programme, we have aimed to do something different, very much like the way we operate the rest of the business. We don’t follow the trends. Our road cars are different to our competitors’, so too will be our driving programme.”
Those who take part in the driver programme will start at the McLaren Technology Centre, where they will have access to areas that were previously off limits. Each person will get to go on a bespoke programme that is designed to optimise and hone their driving skills, teaching them how to get the best out of their car. This experience is similar to that of previous race winners and world champions.
