Yamaha has launched its first ‘streetfighter-style’ model in the 125cc motorbike category with its superb new MT-125.
After the success of the recently launched MT-07 and MT-09, which have been racking up some pretty impressive sales, the company’s latest model is designed to appeal to younger riders.
“The new MT-125 has been shaped by the strong MT family DNA to give it a charismatic appearance and a commanding street presence that is reinforced by its genuine big bike looks and advanced technology,” said a spokesperson for Yamaha.
“Every detail on this new streetfighter – from the angular headlight through to the upswept tail – has been shaped by its MT DNA to create a new kind of 125 with a serious ‘full-size’ bike image.”
The MT-125 features a naked chassis, while it has a “sporty and relatively upright” riding position courtesy of a new tank, seat and footrest design. In fact compared to the YZF-R125 supersport model, the streetfighter edition has a easier riding position for both the rider and passenger, making it a more useful everyday bike. It’s nice and agile for low speed riding in the city with a steering angle of 33.5 degrees.
The engine and fuel tank area is compact, with the single cylinder 125cc engine equipped with a close fitting underguard.
It also features a high specification front end that includes 41mm upside down front forks. These offer greater rigidity for more precise steering.
“With 130mm of travel at the front end together with 114mm available through the linked monoshock rear suspension, the MT-125 is built to give a sporty and comfortable ride,” says Yamaha.
The bike’s front braking system is described as one of the most advanced in the class, and features a floating 292mm diameter disc that is equipped with a radially mounted caliper that is designed to provide better initial response and more effective stopping power.
Available in the UK from July, the MT-125 will be available in a choice of three colours: Matt Red, Matt Grey and Race Blu. Motorbike insurance will reflect the value of the machine, which is expected to come in around the £4,000 mark, similar to the KTM Duke.
It comes as Yamaha releases another 125cc machine for the city; the Majesty S, a compact and affordable new 125cc scooter. It boasts lightweight 13-inch wheels, monoshock rear suspension and is powered by a liquid-cooled 4-stroke engine.
This has the city commuter a lot more in mind than the MTY-125, which is more of an all-rounder. The large, flat footboard area and stepped dual seat offer a natural and relaxed riding position, while making it much better leg access to the ground for all the stop-start city riding.
It also has an automatic seat opening device that gives quick access to the storage compartment, while passengers can enjoy fold out footrests and stepped dual seat and grab bars.
