Which cars will make you the envy of any track day? Better weather is starting to arrive for most of us, and for petrolheads the prospect of spring and summer brings with it the anticipation of enjoying track days in the sun.
If you’ve never been to one, a track day is an organised event in which members of the public are allowed to drive around motor racing circuits like Silverstone or around other designated tracks, including disused airfields.
There are no speed restrictions so you can really enjoy putting the pedal to the metal – although it’s important to note that these aren’t races.
If you have heard of them and are in fact a dedicated track day enthusiast, then you’ll already know that there’s nothing quite like taking a car out there and really testing exactly what it – and you – can do. It’s the closest most of us will get to feeling like a Top Gear presenter for the day.
Although it’s fair to say that it’s how you drive on track day rather than what you drive that will set you apart from the other attendees, there’s no doubt that some cars seem made for roaring around a track with the sun glinting off their bonnets and the mud flying around their wheel arches.
Here are our top five track day cars, whether you’re in the market for one with poise and grip or just like to appreciate their power and beauty.
1. Porsche Cayman GTS
This car looks great and will take you from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds, but it’s the Sports mode that will be ideal for track days, making the vehicle really agile as you take those corners.
2. Nissan GT-R
While some cars seem built exclusively for tracks, this will look equally at home on the roads and is therefore a great car for everyone. However, that twin-turbo V6 engine gives it plenty of extra oomph, so don’t be afraid that it’s boring and strait-laced.
3. Porsche 911
Pick any Porsche 911 and you won’t be disappointed come track day, as this is a true classic – that’s why even people who don’t know about cars have heard of it. The GT3 will be an excellent choice though, as it was specifically designed for speed and high performance.
4. Toyota GT86
Another entry that’s great for both track and road, this also shouldn’t be confused with something your grandmother might drive. Yes, it’s budget-friendly, but its 2.0-litre flat-four engine, fast steering and sleek design mean you’ll be able to hold your own against all your fellow attendees at the tracks.
5. McLaren 650s Spider
Last but certainly not least, there’s the McLaren 650s Spider, which is a favourite of all the TV car shows – and for good reason. It has a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, can do 0-62mph in just three seconds and will grip the track like a racing car. Not only that, but it even has a Track Mode for even better torque and more street cred.
