Mercedes-Benz has taken to the stage at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show to unveil a new concept as part of the LA Design Challenge.
The Ener-G-Force has been created as a precursor to the upcoming reinvention of the G-Class that is due for launch in 2015 and features a bold new look, and the installation of the latest cutting-edge technologies.
While the model has definitely evolved in its new incarnation, the Ener-G-Force continues to bear a striking resemblance to the current G-Class.
Its front grille, wing-mounted indicators and G-shaped LED headlights are all reminiscent of the present design, but the major new developments for the model focus mainly on the use of off-road and new green technology.
Set to wow the crowds at this year’s event, the Ener-G-Force utilises hydrogen fuel cell technology for its power source, meaning it does not require recharging – as electric vehicles do – and has an effective range of up to 500 miles.
The model’s “engine” uses hydro-tech converter technology to transform recycled water into hydrogen for its fuel and as such, it could be one of the greenest vehicles on the market in the years to come.
Converted hydrogen from the onboard fuel cell is then combined with oxygen to create H2O and electricity, powering the vehicle and creating emissions nothing more harmful than simple water vapour.
However, the innovation of the Ener-G-Force’s designers does not end there, and as it is set to be an all-terrain vehicle, the model also features a roof-mounted terrain mapping system, which is capable of reading the landscape and making minute adjustments to the suspension to ensure it can handle all that is thrown at it.
Running until December 9th, the model can be seen at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show that is currently being held at the Los Angeles Convention Centre.
