Mercedes-Benz has certainly not been shy when talking about its latest model, with the S 63 AMG Coupe set to be the new poster car for the luxury brand.
The two-door coupe is the kind of car that commands a double-take. It effortlessly exudes class and style while also making a declarative statement about its power – even when standing still.
It has been described as ‘breathtaking’ and ‘irresistible’ by the manufacturer. To be honest, Mercedes is pretty much bang-on the money.
The major aim of the car’s design is to emphasise the sport performance. This is achieved by numerous aerodynamic elements, the three-dimensional AMG ‘twin-blade; radiator grille in silver chrome and the addition of a front splitter in the same material. Twin tailpipes at the rear also provide that visceral sense of power.
Of course, the luxury doesn’t stop when you move inside. The cabin features what Mercedes calls a ‘beguilingly luxurious interior’, as well as a seamlessly integrated instrument panel and newly developed AMG sports seats.
The latter feature can be controlled using electrical adjustment, while memory function and seat heating help to increase comfort and offer the optimum driver position.
Fine nappa leather has been used throughout, with the AMG badges on the back seat – you know, just in case your passengers need a reminder of what you are driving.
Mercedes hasn’t forgotten about technology either, with a high-resolution TFT colour display included in the AMG instrument cluster.
A standard fitted touchpad allows drivers and front passengers to operate the radio, telephone and navigation functions with ease.
Okay, it’s time to talk power. We know that’s what you’ve really been waiting for.
Under the bonnet is a 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine, capable of 585hp and a staggering 900Nm of torque. It is the most powerful edition of the BlueDIRECT engine family.
This all equates to a top speed of 155mph (electronically limited) and a 0 to 62mph time of 3.9 to 4.3 seconds, depending on which variety of the model you chose.
The model also features a world first, with the S 63 AMG Coupe fitted with an AMG sports suspension based on Magic Body Control.
It is the first time a series-production car has been fitted with the curve tilting function, allowing the car to lead into bends much like a motorcyclist or skier would.
This function can be selected as one of the three drive modes available in the car, making it easier to negotiate corners at higher speeds – particularly helpful on country roads.
The Magic Body Control suspension also has Road Surface Scan and Active Body Control. This means the can can detect surface undulations with the help of a stereo camera. The suspension then adjusts in advance to suit the situation. This is possible in the Comfort and Sport settings.
We dare you to take one look at the Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupe and pretend you don’t want it. Go on. It’s more difficult than you think.
