With Sony primed and ready to release the latest edition in the popular Gran Turismo video game for the Playstation 3, Mercedes-Benz has created a brand new super sports concept car to feature in the virtual driving experience.
The Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo is not yet a production model, but a 1:1 scale model has been created that will feature at the grand opening of the manufacturer’s brand new Research and Development Center in Sunnyvale, California.
In the game, the model delivers 585 hp and 800 NM of torque and the body is expected to emulate these figures.
Furthermore, the car is intended to give a glimpse as to the future of automotive design – especially when it comes to the potential of future Merc designs.
It looks pretty impressive. Really.
The vehicle is presented in shimmering silver body paint, with curves that will make your head spin. It undulates and ripples in stunning fashion, with an extended bonnet and drivers cockpit located close to the rear axle.
It’s like a mixture between a classic American sedan and an aggressive modified racing car. The angry twist is accentuated by the exposed front teeth in the snarling grille, as well as the narrowed headlights and wheel-arches that suggest horns when seen from the front.
Big alloy-wheels almost mask any presence of rubber from the car, making it look more suitable for a rail track than a motorway.
The extremely low body form and the brutish width also gives it a sense of strength and power, even when it’s not moving.
From the back, the model comes straight out of science fiction. LED lights in segmented configurations, with a rear wing and double exhaust space will make the driver behind think they are following a space ship rather than a road legal car!
Gran Turismo is celebrating its 15th birthday, and the model has been developed to complement the occasion.
Gordon Wagener, vice president of Design Daimler, said: “By virtue of its proportions and expressive appearance, the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo embodies the brand’s defining design philosophy of sensuous purity in a unique way. The design of this concept car reflects to extreme effect the perfect symbiosis between emotional, sensuous contours and intelligently presented high tech.”
Those playing the game will get one of the closest experiences of driving the car without even being behind the wheel. This will be achieved after the sound specialists at Mercedes-AMG has created an exhaust note to help perfectly capture the power of a high performance V8.
On the inside, the car has been given inspiration from the average Formula 1 car cockpit, with a sports seat fitting seamlessly into the protective driver’s shell. Gullwing doors on either side also intend to form part of the car’s instrument panel.
A central display, made of a glass surface above the racing steering wheel and shift panels, displays the vital information, such as road speed, engine speed and operating temperature.
Forget video games! Mercedes-Benz should just hurry up and make this machine a reality.
