The latest addition to BMW’s X family is the all-new X4, a model which comes as a first for the iconic manufacturer.
By taking the sporting elegance of the standard X-range machine, but adding the features of a classical coupe, BMW has created its first ever sports activity coupe.
This unique model packs all the muscle and brawn associated with SUVs and 4x4s, but with a smooth and sleek top section.
It follows the trail left by the BMW X6 in the fact it delivers an unmistakable road presence. The front end screams power and ferocity while the coupe roofline offers an unexpected silhouette.
On the inside, BMW has intended to further develop the harmony between sporty and elegant features. The ‘driver focused’ cabin has a range of premium materials, including a high-gloss black-panel look and aluminium trim strips in the wood panelling. A lower driving position also enhances the sports-like feel.
Customers will have a choice of three diesel engines, offering an excellent range depending on the driver’s specific needs.
The first is the xDrive20d 2.0-litre diesel, presented in an all aluminium construction. This is able to deliver a peak torque of 400Nm and creates 190hp at 4,000rpm.
This equates to a 0-62mph sprint time of eight seconds flat, while CO2 emissions are kept to 138g/km.
A second powertrain option is the 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine in the xDrive30d. This is twinned with a standard eight-speed Sport automatic transmission and returns 47.9mpg while emissions are kept to 156g/km of CO2.
Engine output is 258hp at 4,000rpm, while peak torque of 560Nm can be achieved at just 1,500rpm. All this for a 0-62mph time of 5.8 seconds.
Finally, the xDrive35d engine sits at the top of the range, offering a 3.0-litre monster that comfortably delivers 313hp and 630Nm of torque. With launch control fitted as standard, this version of the X4 can go from zero to 62mph in 5.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 153mph.
The X4 also comes with BMW ConnectedDrive, the manufacturer’s range of class-leading in-car technologies.
This includes the latest-generation professional multimedia navigation system with ECO PRO route guidance, which is mated with the iDrive touch controller. Safety is improved through innovations such as a high-beam assistant, driving assistant plus with pedestrian and collision warning, lane departure warning and a city brake function.
Drivers can also take advantage of the active cruise control option, while a stop and go system helps to limit emissions.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a BMW if it didn’t provide excellent handling. The cars are produced with a sporty suspension set-up connected to the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, ensuring balance and traction by splitting the drive between the rear wheels continuously.
According to BMW, this allows the X4 to surpass the driving dynamics which are featured in the X3 when it comes to sportiness.
