Start the fanfare, begin the drumroll, everyone gather round! BMW has officially revealed the latest models that make up the fifth-generation of its high-performance sports cars under the M series.
That’s right, BMW has been busy showing off its two latest additions to the family – the M3 Saloon and the M4 Coupe.
It will be the first time the models have ever been given individual names, increasing exclusivity and adding a little personal touch.
This isn’t the only thing that’s new when it comes to the latest M models. Oh no. The M models will also come with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology.
Remarkably, the vehicles are able to achieve 431hp and 550Nm of torque. They will each go from standing to 62mph in as little as 4.3 seconds, achieving a top speed of 155mph when the driver puts the pedal to the metal.
Not only does the torque and rev range of 1,850rpm far exceed the outgoing M3, the cars will also reduce fuel consumption and emissions by as much as 25 per cent – delivering 32.1 mpg and 204g/km of CO2.
The manufacturer has successfully achieved a weight loss of over 80kgs when compared to its predecessor. Lightweight materials are used to accomplish this, such as a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic roof.
Designers have also ensured that aerodynamics are top-notch, in order to further improve performance capabilities and limiting drag, which leads to increased fuel consumption.
Both models are intended to deliver high-power, as well as quality driving pleasure, both on the road and on the track.
The development of an “aggressively styled front apron”, in addition to a smooth underbody and defined lip spoiler at the rear, help to create axle lift which improves handling, according to head of development at BMW M Albert Biermann.
In addition to each model featuring classic exterior BMW stylings, making both instantly recognisable, the interiors have also received careful attention.
The ergonomic interior demonstrates a “clear driver focus” while delivering an abundantly sporty feel. The M motif is featured throughout, with M equipment details, an M gearshift lever and M design instruments within the car’s graphics.
Bucket seats further help to create the racing car feel and to optimise the seating position in order to deliver support and make the drive that much more enjoyable.
Of course, the models also exude class, with BMW Individual Merino Leather and BMW Individual interior trim elements available for drivers looking for more personalisation.
The UK models will also include Adaptive M suspension, 19-inch M light alloy wheels and front and rear parking distance controls.
Power steering can also be adjusted to meet the needs of the driver, with three distinct settings: COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+.
This means the person behind the wheel can pick between comfortable damper settings for urban driving, or a stiffer setup for increased performance on country roads. Finally, the third and final option helps to limit body movements, while increasing dynamic performance to help it fly around the track.
