Will Aston Martin’s F1 team be a force to be reckoned with?
Aston Martin is returning to Formula One this year to end a 61-year hiatus. And they say it’s all doom and gloom.
The British marque will be teaming up with title partners Cognizant with the official team name being ‘Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team’. So, who are Cognizant exactly? Cognizant is an American-based multinational digital services company offering IT, software and a range of other services to big businesses, including Facebook for which it has worked on implementing new features and policing content on the platform.
Team owner, Lawrence Stroll, has commented that the US technology multinational has been playing an important role in equipping the Silverston factory with the latest technology. Artificially intelligence, data analysis and other key technologies are being employed to make the new Aston Martin F1 team as cutting-edge as possible with Stroll describing the changes as “digitally transforming” and “a new world for us”.
And what about the Aston Martin F1 team? Well, so far we know that they’ll be taking over the team formerly known as Racing Point since 2019. This Silverstone-based team had drivers Sergio Pérez and Lance Stroll represent it in 2019 and 2020 and highlights included the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix where Pérez gave Racing Point its first win and Stroll also had a podium finish in 3rd place. Overall, Racing Point finished 4th in the World Constructor’s Championship standings, with McLaren beating them by seven points.
Both Stroll and Pérez are strong drivers performing well in 2020, finishing 11th and 4th in the World Drivers’ Championship standings respectively. Despite Pérez’s strong finish and a contract to drive for the team until 2022, he will be replaced by Sebastian Vettel which was known since earlier last year. Vettel has won four World Drivers’ Championship titles consecutively from 2010 to 2013 and has been racing with Ferrari since 2015, closely contending with Hamilton.
Ditching the pink livery used by Force India/Racing Point, the new Aston Martin livery is believed to be British racing green according to the teaser images. The official livery will be official revealed at the 2021 season launch in February and we can’t wait to see it.
The Canadian billionaire and father to Lance Stroll, Lawrence Stroll, believes the Aston Martin team in which he holds a major share will become a ‘major force’ in F1. Let us know if you think he’s correct, in the comments.
