Aston Martin has finally provided performance details for the hotly anticipated Valkyrie hypercar, designed in partnership with Red Bull.
Aston Martin has been teasing petrolheads with talk of its Valkyrie hypercar for almost three years, but has finally provided some hard-and-fast details about its blistering performance.
The progeny of a technical partnership between Aston Martin and Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the Valkyrie boasts maximum power of 1,160 bhp at 10,500 rpm.
According to Aston Martin, this represents a world record for a naturally aspirated, emissions-compliant road car. Of that eye-watering figure, the 6.5-litre engine produces 1,000 bhp on its own, with the remainder provided courtesy of the battery electric system.
The huge powertrain – centred around the Cosworth-built 65° V12 engine – is intended to be reminiscent of the loud and proud, ultra-high-revving Formula 1 units of the 1990s.
But this isn’t a simple case of copycatting, as the engine utilises all the latest advances in manufacturing, design and materials. Just as in a contemporary F1 car, many of the powertrain’s key components perform multiple roles.
The gearbox doubles as a rear suspension mounting point and contributes to the vehicle’s structural rigidity, thereby removing the need to fit a separate rear subframe. This in turn will help to keep down the Valkyrie’s weight, boosting its performance.
Aston Martin’s vice president and special vehicle operations officer David King said: “Aston Martin Valkyrie is set to be the ultimate hypercar in the automotive world and these performance figures underline that statement.
“We have already created a hybrid system that is emissions-compliant and ready to begin fitting to our first physical prototypes. I am, as I’m sure the rest of the world is, incredibly excited to see and hear the first of these cars on track.”
The marque showed off what it described as the “first verification prototype” of the Valkyrie at the recent Geneva Motor Show. The design should closely resemble the finished production model, which is expected to start shipping at the end of this year.
