You might not bee too familiar with ALPINA, despite the name having a very familiar ring to it.
Though the ALPINA B4 S Edition 99 – the 99 indicates the number of vehicles being produced – will surely peak interest in the company.
Having existed as a motor manufacturer since 1983, ALPINA has been a BMW partner for over 40 years, providing high power and upmarket luxury takes on the BMW range. The company produces only 2,000 vehicles annually worldwide, maintaining an air of exclusivity in what they do.
And what they do is pretty special. Fully approved by BMW and working in close harmony, ALPINA are able to produce some fine customised versions of cars we might already know about, retaining the BMW DNA, as the company are keen to point out.
ALPINA already produce a BMW B4 S Bi-Turbo featuring a revised, more powerful, straight six 3-litre engine complimented by ALPINA sport suspension. It’s not just about tweaking the mechanics though, as the BMW B4 S features new front and rear aprons as standard along with redesigned rear LED lights. Inside, split-folding rear seats offer improved flexibility.
The announcement of a very limited edition version is exciting news. While the ‘standard’ ALPINA B4 S can reach 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds, ALPINA claim that the limited edition will be able to achieve this in under 4 seconds (with all-wheel drive option), thanks to 446bhp and a massive 502lb ft torque.
The ALPINA B4 S Edition 99 also features a titanium exhaust system courtesy of Slovenian exhaust experts, Akrapovič, which compliments nicely with the ALPINA multi-spoke old-school alloy rims. Top speed is still 190mph, which is surely fast enough for anywhere on earth. You may have twigged that this must mean that the standard 155mph BMW limiter is no longer in use for the ALPINA version and this is indeed so.
The ALPINA B4 S Edition 99 comes in a choice of coupé or a convertible (at the expense of some of the suspension fine-tuning that the coupé gets). For a limited edition, that ability to heavily customise your purchase is welcome, though at just 99 models and a fairly reasonable starting price of £73,100 (depending on your chosen options) the car is sure to not be hanging around for long.
