So, we’ve decided that it’s time we all take our hats off to the guys behind the Summer Nationals drag racing weekend, which has been staged every summer – almost without fail – since 2005. The almost bit refers to when it was sabotaged by rain in 2014, which meant that eliminations couldn’t be completed, and despite a brief interlude of the wet stuff, there hasn’t been a repeat of the disappointment from then. Phew!
Taking place at the Santa Pod raceway, near Northampton, over the weekend of June 25th and 26th, Summer Nationals 2016 played host to the third round of the MSA British Drag Racing Championships and featured a wide range of race cars and bikes, including the Fireforce Jet Car.
We were chuffed to be in attendance, particularly as the drag racing weekend saw Worcester-based father/son team Brian and Lee Huxley finish top out of 25 entries with all cars in the class covering a quarter-mile between 9.00 and 11.99 seconds.
The Huxley team won the national championship in 2015 and the members sit at the top of the championship in 2016 with three rounds remaining in the series.
Stu Doignie came out tops in two categories – Super Comp and Super Gas – while Daniel Giles won the Super Pro ET group. Leigh Morris was in winner in the Super Street group while Andy Robinson triumphed in the MSA Pro Modified class.
Shifting our focus to awesome things on two wheels, the Funny Bike class was won by Phil Crossley, with Super Street Bike category being topped by Steve Venables. Steve Woollatt was the ACU Top Fuel Bike winner, while Alex Hope was victorious in the Pro Stock Bike class.
The rest of the 2016 MSA British Drag Racing Championships will unfurl at Santa Pod with the fourth and fifth rounds taking place at the end of July and early September respectively.
You can look forward to the penultimate round on September 24th and 25th. Gentlefolk, start your engines!
For now, enjoy some more snaps from Darren!
