It’s hard not to think of the MG as a modern brand these days, but the ubiquitous little sports car has been around for quite some time now and dates back to pre-war days.

Deceptively, it’s also been quite some time since a new MG convertible was revealed, almost 3 decades in fact, so there’s understandably a little bit of a buzz around the new 2023 MG Cyberster.

You can’t say that MG doesn’t time things well though; after all that time spent not introducing a new 2-seater convertible, 2023 arrives and MG jumps in ahead of the game with the Cyberster 2-seater sports car – an electric convertible. Another reason the Cyberster is causing a bit of a buzz; and it looks great too.

The good thing about the MG Cyberster is that it simply looks like a classic 2-seater convertible. It features a fully electric folding sunroof made out of fabric that cleanly folds away into the rear leaving the smooth curving lines of the Cyberster uninterrupted.

What is sure to be a real talking point are the arrow-style rear lights which are surrounding by LED borders.

The doors too are a bit of an eye-opener, as both doors scythe more upwards rather than open outwards – a boon for tight spaces one would presume.

Unlike many concept vehicles, it does seem that MG has made an effort to try to port quite a few of the usual concept quirks across to the production model, something that surely has to be admired; much easier to do on a fun 2-seater than a family car though of course.

Another point to note is that the MG Cyberster is a bit larger than previous MG convertibles, in part due to the fact that the car has to house the electric powertrain and batteries.

Talking of which, the Cyberster will arrive with a choice of single or twin motors. The single motor will offer 308bhp while the twin motor will give you 536hp.

High Performance With Longer Range

The Cyberster’s top speed will sit at the 124mph mark and 0-62mph is expected to be under 3 seconds depending on configuration.

MG also says that the Cyberster will give you around 500 miles on a single battery charge, so all in all some quite impressive figures, especially as those battery range figures creep ever upwards with each new major model that appears these days.

If this sounds like the perfect future-proofed upgrade for your ageing MG convertible, then you have a little while to wait yet, as 2024 is the expected date for European production models to be released.

MG Cyberster Price

Changes to the MG Cyberster could yet still be made before that date, but MG expects that the single motor version will be likely to cost in excess of £50,000 in today’s market, with the dual-motor Cyberster to cost £10,000 more.

It’s certainly great to see MG return with such a striking and relatively important car in the ever-progressing world of the electric automobile.
