There is nothing more frustrating than going to buy the car of your dreams, only to find that the insurance costs are sky-high. Sound familiar? Well, we have found some cars that might be perfect for you because they all sit in the lower insurance groups and won’t cost the earth to insure.

Volkswagen Up!

VW Up

As with most of the cars on our list, the Up! is cheap to run with good fuel economy. It has an impressive 5-star Euro NCAP assessment and for its low specification versions the insurance is brought down to just a Group 1. The tiny turning circle makes it a dream to park and it can tackle city streets with ease.

Toyota Yaris

Toyota-Yaris

An affordable option, the Yaris is another safe little city car that could prove unbelievably cheap to insure, depending on the driver of course. Looking for a more eco-friendly choice? Then you are in luck as it also comes as an economical hybrid.

Skoda Fabia

Skoda-Fabia

The joys of Insurance Group 2 await you if you choose the entry level, 1.0-litre engine Fabia. This can help make up for its slightly higher price tag. There’s plenty of storage inside, the equipment is above average and you can travel in comfort thanks to the spacious interior.

Smart Fortwo

Smart-Fortwo

There’s no denying that the Fortwo stands out in a crowd with its unique styling and minuscule dimensions. Parking couldn’t be easier and its perfect for short trips. As you’d have guessed its cheap to run, has very low CO2 emissions and great fuel economy.

Dacia Sandero

Dacia-Sandero

It may surprise you but the 1.2-litre engined, 5 door supermini 16V Access model falls into insurance group 2. Being so cheap to insure, run and buy, its no wonder that this Dacia is popular among smaller families in need of a new car despite its lack of ‘fancy’ features.

Fiat panda

Fiat-Panda

Whichever version you choose, you get stability control and TPMS as standard. Not only is this car practical, affordable and spacious, its also safe with a 4 star Euro NCAP rating. Distinctive styling and height mean that this city car turns heads, as well as offering headroom for drivers and passengers.

Ford Ka+

Ford-Ka+

Ranging from insurance group 1 to 2, this is certainly a smart choice for anyone looking to save money on their car insurance. Running costs are low and you can tell its a quality build as the cabin is nice and quiet for a cheaper hatchback.

Hyundai i20

Hyundai-i20

Go for a low power version and you can pay group 4 insurance but, whilst higher than others on our list, this car is well worth considering as it offers the best cabin space in its class and low running costs. With the i20 you get performance, comfort and practicality in a stylish package.

Kia Picanto

Kia-Picanto

A fantastic all-rounder, the Picanto looks great, is economical, has a long warranty and sits nicely in the lowest insurance group. On top of that, the equipment inside is impressive and there are two trims to choose from.

Renault Twingo

Renault-Twingo

You won’t be wanting for space in the Twingo as the seats fold down and create a large boot space. Its tight turning circle is great for nipping around town or parking and its actually a lot of fun to drive, with the most eco-friendly option being the SCe 70 in the Dynamique models (with standard stop/start).
