On Saturday 29th January 2016, the final Land Rover Defender made its way to the end of the production line. But it wasn’t just the end of the assembly line for that specific vehicle, in actual fact, it was the end of the Defender.
For 67 years the Defender has been in our lives, starting at a factory in Solihull back in 1948 the adaptable 4×4 has crossed nearly every part of the world.
Essentially, the Defender’s looks haven’t changed all too much and do you blame them? Personally the quote:
“Why fix something if it isn’t broken?”
really does apply in the case of the Defender. If you see one driving past in the street or tackling the desert dunes, the distinctive square front-end with circle headlamps immediately lets you know that it’s a Defender.
The fact that the Defender was so adaptable made it a sure favourite 4×4 multi-purpose vehicle, so much so that the Army used them for almost all of their operations.
The Defender has become a staple of British manufacturing and is well loved by the nation, so from us here at Motor-Vision we would like to say a large farewell to the Defender and hope Land Rover are able to bring a new model to hopefully continue the Defenders legacy.
