Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus (SCG) may not be a household name like Ferrari or Lamborghini, but its new hypercar could be set to give the big boys a run for their money.

The American company has revealed the SCG 004S, a 650bhp three-seater that shares the same cockpit configuration as the McLaren F1.

SCG 004S front

It’s the second road-legal car from the brand, following on from the SCG 003S that was unveiled at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show.

This new model packs a 5.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 and weighs just 1,179kg thanks to its carbon fibre chassis, and SCG has ambitions beyond getting it into the hands of the select few who can justify the $400,000 (£300,600) price tag.

SCG 004S side

It has recently been granted permission to manufacture vehicles in the US – previously production took place in Italy – meaning it can ramp up output to as many as 325 cars each year, thanks to being granted low-volume manufacturer status. Having this many rolling off the production line is one of the requirements for entering the model – or a racegoing variant of it – in endurance races like 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it would enter the GTE class.

On-road testing is set to begin in mid-2018, with delivery to customers before the end of the year. Its performance figures will no doubt be impressive, although it remains to be seen whether the 004S can get close to the eye-watering 0-60 time of 1.9 seconds boasted by the new Tesla Roadster.

SCG 004S rear

SCG is owned by James Glickenhaus, the American film director, producer and entrepreneur who broke into the car industry with the Ferrari P4/5, a coachbuilt model designed for him by Pininfarina that was based on the Enzo Ferrari.
