Only 40 models will ever be built – 20 drop-tops and 20 fixed-roofs – and all of them have already been snapped up despite costing £1.5 million a piece. Obviously, any Lambo is special but what exactly goes into a car to make people want to spend that kind of money?

As the name may have suggested, the Centenario (pronounced ‘sen-ten-ahh-ree-oh’) was devised to celebrate 100 years of the Italian brand’s founder, Ferruccio Lamborghini.

As such, designers were let off the leash to come up with an open design that embodies the forward-thinking qualities of Lamborghini’s visionary founder and demonstrates the brand’s commitment to elevating automotive design to new heights.

With clean surfaces and superb reflections, the Centenario is weighted by a ‘form follows function’ ethos boasting low overhangs at the front and rear of the carbon fibre body, which is matte finished in an exclusive special silver exterior colour, named Argento Centenatrio.

It uses the most powerful engine ever built by Lamborghini – a naturally aspirated V12 with 759bhp – and because it weighs little more than 1.5 tonnes, it can blast to 62mph in 2.9 seconds with a top speed in excess of 217mph. Despite such incredible power, it can brake from 62mph to a standstill in just 30 metres.

The interior boasts a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Apple’s iPhone-mirroring CarPlay system, and the car’s two cameras mean that drivers can share what it’s like to drive such an exclusive model.

One of the bosses at Lamborghini said the “classic roadster” was the perfect combination of “innovation and timeless design” and “a befitting tribute to Lamborghini’s extraordinary past and a preview of its brilliant future”.

We’re inclined to agree.
