The Agera XS is one of two cars Koenigsegg is taking to this year’s Monterery Car Week – along with a cherry red Regera – and if you like ‘karosserie orange’ and going fast then it is the car for you.

This 1,394kg  car is powered by a 1,144bhp five-litre twin-turbocharged engine – linked to a CIMA seven-speed paddle-shift transmission – which gives it one of the highest power-to-weight ratios around. However, it will remain completely road legal when it goes on sale in the US later this year, Koenigsegg says.

It also features the largest rear wing ever to appear on a Koenigsegg, and a removable lightweight hardtop which can be detached or refitted in minutes and stored on-board beneath the car’s front bonnet.

The Agera XS’ exterior orange intensity continues inside with black alcantara contracting even more tangy goodness.

The Agera XS is an evolution of the Koenigsegg One:1 – the brand’s first ever ‘megacar’ – and utilises much of the technology developed during its creation. However, there has been greater consideration given to practicality and creature comforts.

It comes with everyday conveniences like *deep breath* smart airbags, adjustable pedals and steering column, six-way electrically adjustable carbon sport seats, carbon ceramic brakes with Sport ABS, KES stability control, front/rear hydraulic lifting system, active shock absorbers, active ride height, active front and rear aerodynamics, LifePo4 battery, Apple CarPlay, USB connection and media player, climate control, digital warning and information system, G sensor, alarm and tyre monitoring system. Phew…

You’re probably waiting for the bit where we say that it uses parts from some other more ordinary car – borrowing bits of an Audi here or a Fiat there – but Koenigsegg is completely independent, with fewer than 100 employees. The only exterior involvement comes from minority stakeholder BAIC Group, which also has dealings with Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz.

Koenigsegg boss Christian von Koenigsegg says that the car will make a watershed moment for the brand, marking its return to the US market.
