Porsche's new 918 Spyder model is racing ahead in development, with the luxury sportscar manufacturer having completed driving trials of its new design.

"What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun, efficiency and performance," commented Wolfgang Hatz, member of the executive board for research and development at Porsche.

The 918 Spyder is a two-door roadster that was first shown as a concept at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and is scheduled for consumer release in September 2013. The Spyder will be a plug-in hybrid that delivers the performance and pace of a traditional petrol-powered vehicle.

Delivering 770 combined horsepower from its 4.6-litre V8 hybrid engine, the model also boasts fuel consumption of just three litres of petrol per 100 km. It achieves this feat by coupling the petrol engine with a 6.8 kWh capacity lithium-ion battery.

Performance is unlikely to be an issue for buyers, as the vehicle provides a top speed of 201 mph and 93 mph using just the electric drivetrain.
