With the New York Auto Show 2014 rapidly approaching, Land Rover has revealed the new model it will be taking to this year’s event.
The futuristic looking Discovery Vision concept will be the manufacturer’s prime draw to its stand, with the car exhibiting the new modern design language which could be used for future models under the Discovery name.
It features a whole range of new technologies to make it one of the most advanced concepts under development.
The features delivered by Jaguar Land Rover’s research department include smart glass, intelligent headlamps and gesture control.
Smart glass brings augmented reality to the entire glasshouse, while functions such as the indicators, headlamps and seatback screen are operated just by using your hands. The ‘day-like’ laser headlamps come with object tracking and beam-dipping technology to react to any road situation.
It also comes with a new terrain response system, including remote control drive, laser terrain scanning and a transparent bonnet head-up display.
These changes all seem pretty incredible, but are just a couple of examples of how Jaguar Land Rover is innovating to deliver the future of motoring.
The release of the new concept follows an announcement made by the manufacturer at the Geneva Motor Show that the Discovery family is set for an evolution.
Appropriately, 2014 represents the 25th anniversary year of the original Discovery, so these new creations map out what the future could be like for the iconic model.
Gerry McGovern, design director and chief creative officer at Land Rover, said: “The Discovery Concept vehicle represents a Vision of our future family of leisure SUVs. Its modern, relevant and compelling design is a significant shift from Discovery as we know it, while well considered practicality, configurability and Land Rover’s capability seamlessly blend to create a highly desirable vehicle that connects on an emotional level.”
The Land Rover Discovery Vision is even more practical, innovative and versatile than ever before.
By folding the seats flat, or by sliding them forward and back, customers can customise their vehicle to feature a seven-, six-, five- or four-seat layout. For those with an extra sense of class, the latter setting offers a limousine-like interior space.
All of these changes can be done by using the menu on the vehicle’s in-built touchscreen technology.
Dr Wolfgang Epple, director of research and technology at Jaguar Land Rover, emphasised that the latest Discovery sets out a vision for the brand’s future.
“It showcases the innovative approach that continues our leadership of the off-road segment. Smarter, more connected, more desirable and more capable – the Land Rovers of tomorrow will be fully and perfectly integrated into everyday life,” he said.
To mark the launch of this new futuristic car, the first global reveal was conducted in collaboration with the manufacturer’s new commercial partner Virgin Galactic.
The Land Rover Discovery Vision was placed alongside the SpaceShipTwo – Virgin’s first commercial passenger-carrying spacecraft.
It is a partnership that emphasises the vision of both the companies when it comes to pushing the boundaries of future travel.
