Prestige car maker Jaguar has been named this year's top-ranked vehicle manufacturer for customer satisfaction in the UK.

According to the annual JD Power and Associates/What Car? 2012 UK Vehicle Ownership Satisfaction Study, Jaguar knocked Lexus off the top spot after the rival manufacturer had held the number one position for the last 11 years.

The survey drew on responses from more than 18,000 UK car owners and firmly placed Jaguar as the maker of choice in terms of satisfaction with the vehicle and dealer service.

It asked members of the public to rate the major car manufacturers in terms of vehicle appeal, ownership costs, performance, design, styling, comfort and features, insurance and repair costs, as well as fuel consumption.

The top ten ranked as Jaguar in first place, Lexus and Skoda in joint second, Honda fourth and Mercedes Benz fifth, followed by Toyota, Audi, Volkswagen and Volvo, while BMW and Nissan came in joint tenth.

"This is a great accolade for everyone at Jaguar," said What Car? editor-in-chief Chas Hallett. "This study shows that customers are really satisfied with their Jaguars, a hugely important feat for any car maker."

A marquee with a significant racing pedigree, Jaguar announced its return to the motorsport scene in 2012 with the launch of the new Jaguar Heritage Racing team.

The team will be performing at a host of high-profile events in 2012, including the Mille Miglia, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and each round of the E-type challenge. Utilising years of experience, the team headed to the Nurburgring in Germany to put their classic Jaguars through their paces back in March.

Jaguar Land Rover global head of communications Frank Klaas commented: "The Nurburgring Nordschleife presents a unique automotive challenge that Jaguar's development team continually subject our current and future models to in order to perfect their attributes of quality, durability and dynamic precision."
