The newest supercar on the block, the Jaguar F-Type, has been unveiled for the first time this week at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.

Heralded as Jaguar’s triumphant return to the two-seater convertible sports car sector, the F-Type will be the manufacturer’s first foray into this area in more than 50 years and boy, are they back with a bang.

The F-Type offers some impressive performance statistics, including acceleration from zero to 62 mph in just 4.2 seconds courtesy of its 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol engine delivering 495 bhp.

Drivers will benefit from a number of Jaguar innovations, including ergonomically-grouped controls inspired by the cockpits of fighter planes, as well as an active exhaust system to further boost driver engagement.

Other features of the new F-Type include an active spoiler, which deploys when the vehicle surpasses 120 mph in order to improve stability at high speeds.

Adrian Hallmark, global brand director at Jaguar, said: “Jaguar is a founder member of the sports car segment with a rich sporting bloodline stretching over 75 years, and in the F-Type we’ve reignited that flame.

“The F-Type isn’t designed to be like anyone else’s sports car. It’s a Jaguar sports car – ultra-precise, powerful, sensual and most of all, it feels alive.”

Set to go on sale in mid-2013, the F-Type will have a price tag of £58,500 in the UK and will be available in three variants – F-Type, F-Type S and the F-Type V8 S.

Meanwhile, McLaren has also made its mark at this year’s Paris Motor Show by revealing its new P1 model to the waiting crowds.

Hailed as the natural successor to the hugely popular and powerful McLaren F1, the P1 is to go into full production early next year and will offer buyers a taste of excellence, with the manufacturer keen to go head-to-head with a host of established hypercarcompetitors – such as the Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari Enzo and Pagani Huayra.
