Over the 24th – 25th August, in HOTTTTT Sin City, the penultimate round of Formula Drift took place in the Diamond in the Desert, just outside the famous strip of Vegas.
With a new, fast, custom built course, the pros were put to the test where both skills and fear were pushed to their limits at the world renowned Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The weekend kicked off with the qualifying races taking place after sunset on the Friday evening.
Spectators were treated to drift skills from the likes of Fredric Aasbo and Vaughn Gittin both succeeding to beat their rivals and progress onto the next stage. However, as temperatures soared to a roasting 119 degrees, the heat couldn’t deter the leader, Rhys Millen, who took the lead with first overall position for this round in the final on Saturday evening.
A change of track layout this year meant there was every opportunity for the drivers to display their skills, showing promising chances and creating maximum drift action for the audience! The altered track also added pressure on the drivers but built a fantastic excitement within the crowd.
Millen’s win was unblemished as the man himself stated, “This is a true drivers course and suits the car well and we were flawless all day long. Unfortunately, some of our competitors gifted us a couple wins, but at the end of the day we put the pressure on them to run deep and fast.”
The event is drawing to an end fast and the champion will soon be crowned in the final, Pro Championship, round 7. Taking place between the 12th and the 13th October at Irwindale Speedway, the victor of drift will be declared and reputations may be ruined!
