The remake of iconic cop show The Sweeney has made its silver screen debut this week, with the new Ford Focus ST taking centre stage in the movie.

Synonymous with the Ford brand, the 1970s show was packed with numerous modern classic motors, including the Consul GT, the MK III Cortina and the later Granada 2.8 S.

Individuals of a certain age will therefore be pleased to hear the vehicle manufacturer has also been called upon to provide the wheels for the new film, with the Focus ST involved in numerous action shots and car chases throughout.

As part of promotion efforts for the new production, a number of high octane stunts have been carried out by the Focus ST at motoring events across the UK in recent months, with the car taking on its on-screen nemesis – the Jaguar XFR – at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed and Chris Evans' CarFest.

Famed for its car chases and gritty depiction of the Met's Flying Squad, The Sweeney saw John Thaw as detective John Regan and Dennis Waterman as sergeant George Carter.

It was originally aired during a period of significant unrest within the flying squad, with the division publicly censured for its close links to criminal fraternities, as well as accusations of bribery and corruption among its members.

However, with the TV show proving such a hit with audiences, Ford provided a stream of new vehicles for use in the filming free of charge, including numerous Cortinas, Consuls and Granadas.

It was a good thing too, as the production often called for spectacular crashes and getaways, which resulted in the write-off of more than one model.

In its latest incarnation, the new film features Ray Winstone as Regan and Ben Drew as his loyal partner, with the premiere having taken place back on September 3rd and its nationwide debut coming yesterday (September 12th).
