Classic sports car manufacturer Caterham has announced its new 300 bhp SP/300.R (SPR) sports prototype is nearing completion and will soon be unveiled to the public.
Set to support the company's key motorsport tenets of affordability, reliability and accessibility, the new SPR has been developed in partnership with Lola Cars and promises to be a minimalist fantasy of what a Caterham car could be.
Caterham F1 driver Heikki Kovalainen took the new prototype model out on a test drive around the Jerez circuit in Spain, during a pre-season Formula 1 test and noted it is an extremely taut and responsive vehicle.
Kovalainen said: "The SPR is very quick and a little like a formula car in that I could feel the downforce working and giving it lots of grip and balance. It was great fun to be able to give it a blast in Jerez and I look forward to testing Caterham's road and race cars more often."
Individuals hoping to catch their first glimpse of the new Caterham are in for a treat, as prospective buyers will be able to take a test drive of their own at the Rockingham Motor Speedway on Thursday (March 1st), although the event will only be open to those who have already placed a deposit for their own SPR.
Simon Lambert, Caterham Motorsport manager, added it will be thrilling to see the people who will be buying this car catching their first sight of the model this week.
Last December, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh each attended an event at East Surrey College where pupils had been carrying out work on the restoration of a classic Caterham Seven.
The Caterham Seven formed an integral part of an exhibition of the student's work on the day, with the new £62 million college enabling young people to learn the skills required to maintain the classic cars of today and those in the future.
