Audi is no stranger to delivering top-quality vehicles at the pinnacle of modern design and with optimal amounts of comfort.

That’s why, when the manufacturer says it will deliver a model that has absolutely no compromise, the motoring world sits up and takes notice.

The new A6 has had the statement added, with Audi’s EU-compliant engine not shying away when it comes to performance and speed capabilities.

In fact, despite the way the TDi ultra helps to minimise CO2 emissions by as much as 14 per cent, it comes with no price or equipment penalties.

The A6 2.0 TDI ultra S tronic model delivers 64.2 mpg while emitting just 114g/km of CO2 – which isn’t half bad for a car that can shoot from 0 to 62 mph in just 8.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 144 mph.

According to Audi, the new range of ‘ultra’ models are increasing the focus on class-leading economy and company car viability. The A6 ultra will be leading this charge in the UK.

The manufacturer stated that it comes as a result of the ‘single-minded’ pursuit of incredible efficiency while delivering the best possible performance.

Prof. Ulrich Hackenberg, Audi board member for development, said: “The latest TDI technology, ultra-efficient transmissions, advanced exhaust aftertreatment – customers will hardly see anything, but they’ll notice the effects of powerful acceleration and, thanks to extremely low fuel consumption, when paying at the gas station. The Audi ultra models score points with big advantages for everyday operation – just what customers appreciate.”

The power for the car is provided by a 2.0-litre diesel engine that increases power from the previous unit (177PS) to comply with the incoming EU6 regulations on emissions. The latest version delivers 190PS and torque has increased from 380Nm to 400Nm.

Of course, it hasn’t compromised on how it looks either, with the latest version giving all the style and panache we so associate with the iconic brand.

Presented in silver, it gives all the style of the standard luxury Audi but the muscle of a more functional car.

The LED daylights around the main headlights also make it instantly recognisable as an Audi, whatever the weather or time of day.

So how has Audi achieved such an impressive achievement in reducing emissions while keeping the car among the top of its class for speed and power?

Dr Stefan Knirsch, Audi head of powertrain development, said: “An innovative, highly efficient SCR system removes nitrogen oxides from the exhaust. This measure means that the new ultra models will of course meet the future Euro 6 emission standards while achieving lower fuel consumption.”

While it seems to make sense, it’s difficult to fathom how it works. All we can say is, we’re impressed!
