Morgan Motor Company

The Morgan Motor Company is one of the UK’s most established car manufacturers, producing distinctive, iconic vehicles ‘built to be as individual as its owner’ with values that have not changed for over 110 years.

Morgan Embraces Electrification

Looking at Morgan’s current range of vehicles it would be easy to imagine Morgan to be a traditional automobile manufacturer; one that will stick to its guns until the dying day, which, if we’re honest, the dying day on the horizon now… I’m talking about the traditional combustion engine.

How could a company like Morgan achieve the same sort of thrill and nostalgia without a combustion engine?

Yet, Morgan has embraced what is to come and is looking forward to what might be the future – and how such a sensory experience that Morgan provides can progress forward in an EV world.

The Morgan Super3 XP-1 – a hint of what will see and it’s quite exciting.

With the Super3 XP-1, Morgan has remained true to its traditional profile, yet given us a change in power that will make sure that Morgan is not one of the manufacturers that gets left behind.

All quite satisfying. So how does the Super3 XP-1 fit into the scheme of things?

The Morgan Super3 XP-1 is a 3-wheeler and is still at its early stages of development, but it is still something Morgan is confident enough with to give us a peek preview.

As it stands, the XP-1 will arrive with a 33kWh battery which is encouragingly put together to specs created by Morgan itself, rather than hybridising and utilising the petrol engines of other manufacturers, like those of Rover and BMW.

As yet, we know that the engine will have a range of around 100 miles (upwards), which should be fine for the type of lifestyle automobile a Morgan sets itself up to be.

The 400 volt architecture does offer some freedom for Morgan to dable a bit and increase power.

Morgan’s Chief Technical Officer is Matt Hole, who has some experience of developing electric vehicles and EV powertrains for various other manufacturers.

At Morgan, he will head the team that looks after electrification. Part of his job will be to find a viable way to transfer some of the existing range towards electric power.

Following on from Hole’s appointment, we encouragingly have the Morgan Super3 XP-1.

The Super3 has its powertrain set up in the same position as a standard engine, which helps to keep the handling of the car playing in a similar configuration to a classic petrol-powered Morgan.

Of course, a Morgan needs a sound, and discussion is already underway as to how allow an electric Morgan to use the full senses of the driver, which includes how we hear what we are doing.

Morgan and Hole want Morgan electric offerings to provide a full sensory experience for, what will surely be, a user waiting to be impressed by what Morgan is about to provide.

Morgan has no plans for the XP-1 to ever go into full production – the Super3 XP-1 is an experimental prototype and will be the basis of all future Morgan EV models.

For its immediate future, the XP-1 will begin a comprehensive test programme that will take up to 2 years to complete. We will watch this space.

The smart #3 EV is also worth looking at.
