When you’re in the market for a new car you’ll be looking for a car that isn’t likely to break down. If you’re a city-dweller, you want one that will easily get around congested streets but will also be great when you get onto faster road. But what’s the best car for this?
Warranty Direct has come up with a list of the top ten city cars that aren’t expensive to run and are fairly reliable, whether that’s driving in the city or on the motorway.
The winning car was the Peugeot 107 from 2005 onwards. On Warranty Direct’s Reliability Index it worked out that the reliability score for this car was 19, with a lower score being better. It also found that the largest repair bill for this car was £763.88.
In second place was the Citroen C1 from 2005 onwards, with a reliability score of 22 and the largest repair bill totalling at £1,030. The Kia Picanto from 2004 took third place with a reliability score of 27 and the largest repair bill working out at £724.
Warranty Direct worked out its top ten list by looking at its 50,000 live policies as part of its Reliability Index. It measures scores on the Reliability Index by looking at the rate of failure of cars, their average mileage, age and repair cost and then combined all these results.
Other cars that made it into the top ten were the Volkswagen Lupo from 1999 to 2005 with a score of 31, followed by the Toyota Aygo from 2005 with a score of 32, then the Volkswagen Fox from 2006 to 2012 with 44, the Ford Ka from 1996 to 2009 with 48, Smart ForTwo from 2007 with 53, the Fiat Panda from 2004 with 56 and then the Chevrolet Matiz from 2005 with 65.
As well as working out the top ten, Warranty Direct also calculated the five worst city cars. Despite its popularity at the moment, the new Fiat 500 from 2008 onwards fell into this category with a score of 77. The largest repair bill seen from this vehicle was £2,074.
Smart’s previous model of the ForTwo car was found to score the worst on the reliability index with 107 and the largest repair bill seen totalling at £1,565.31.
Other cars that were included in the bottom five were the Peugeot 1007 from 2005 to 2009 with a score of 106, the Daewoo Matiz from 1998 to 2005 with 71 and the Rover CityRover from 2003 to 2005 with 70.
Commenting on the results, managing director at Warranty Direct David Gerrans said: “With growing concerns about the rising cost of public transport and the inconvenience caused by strike action, choosing a reliable city car instead could be a wise move.
“In the past decade, these small cars have grown up and are now more advanced and efficient than ever before. However, some small cars have given their owners cause for concern with high repair bills so be careful with your selection.”
