Car of the Year award last month with the XC40, Volvo has now bagged themselves the title of UK Car of the Year with the XC60.Not the most exciting or glamourous choice, but this new mid-size SUV clearly did enough to impress the 27-strong judging panel of British motoring writers. After claiming the best medium crossover title, the XC60 went up against another 12 triumphant category winners to fight it out for the top honour, and this marks the first time that Volvo has won the overall prize at the awards after coming close in 2016 with the XC90.Other cars that could’ve won included the Skoda Kodiaq and BMW 5 Series, which came second and third place respectively. We would have been tempted to go for the more aggressive category winners like the Kia Stinger, Hyundai i30 N and Mazda’s hard-top MX-5 RF, but comments from the judges suggest that the XC60 is all the car you’ll ever need.John Challen, director of the UK Car of the Year Awards – which are now in their fifth year, said the XC60’s victory was “very well deserved, at a time when crossovers are becoming increasingly popular”.He added: “Having come close with the XC90, it’s fantastic to see Volvo now claim the top spot with its smaller – but every bit as impressive – stablemate.”Fellow director and judge Alisdair Suttie hailed the XC60 as “everything you ever thought a Scandinavian SUV should be and more.
