Volkswagen is well known for delivering top quality, reliable models, with innovative features and new technologies.
While we all might think we know the popular Golf model, the latest version does come with a little shock in store.
The new Volkswagen Golf GTE is a plug-in hybrid version of the multi-award winning hatchback and is sure to increase its already broad appeal.
It is set to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, but the manufacturer has moved swiftly ahead with releasing new images of the car in action.
The GTE joins the line-up alongside the the petrol-powered GTI and the diesel GTD variant, but this model’s ‘E’ stands for ‘electricity’.
It is equipped with two engines: a 1.4-litre 150 PS TSI direct-injection petrol engine, as well as a 102 PS electric motor. The two combined deliver power up to 204 PS and a theoretical range of 580 miles.
By using just the electric motor, the car can hit speeds up to 81 mph – pretty impressive for a little electric runaround.
However, when teamed with the petrol engine, watch the Golf GTE hit the dizzying speeds of 138 mph, after completing a 0-62 mph stretch in just 7.6 seconds. You can’t really argue with that.
This is all achieved while emitting just 35g/km of CO2 emissions and providing 188 mpg. The positives just keep on coming!
The mode of power can be changed by the simple touch a button, allowing the driver to shift between electric and hybrid as they so please. In pure electric mode, the car will keep on running for 31 miles (depending on terrain and weather conditions) on zero emissions.
It has taken its styling cues from two of its siblings the e-Golf and the GTI. The former can be seen in the front bumper’s C-shaped LED daytime running lights, while the latter is visible in the aerodynamic horizontal ‘fins’ found on the car.
Energy efficiency is not only achieved through the power under the bonnet. This is also helped by the electro-mechanical brake servo and electric air conditioning compressor.
UK versions of the model will include 18-inch ‘Serron’ alloy wheels as standard and they will come in the five-door bodystyle only. All headlights will also be powered by energy-saving LED bulbs.
The beauty won’t just be on the outside either, as the car comes with unique stitching on the steering wheel and seats, with the latter also available in tartan patterning.
Drivers will reap the benefits of the eight-inch Discover Pro satellite navigation system, a DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity.
The Golf has been one of Volkswagen’s stand-out and top-selling vehicles over the years and the latest edition of the car continues its stunning tradition of excellence.
Now, drivers won’t have to compromise between class and saving money, or power and low emissions. The GTE has it all.
Customers in the UK will be able to get their hands on the model in August, with deliveries expected as 2014 draws to a close.
