Volkwagen has unveiled its new zero-emission ID. ROO MZZ SUV and confirmed that the series version will be initially launched in China from 2021.

The car manufacturing giant used the Brand SUV Night and the Auto Shanghai show in April to showcase the latest member of the ID. family, which has been designed as a spacious SUV with three rows of seats.

Among it’s notable features are IQ.DRIVE systems which include the ID. Pilot mode – an option which means that, on request, the vehicle can glide fully automatically through traffic without an active driver.

Seat configurations have also been created with such capabilities in mind, as drivers switching to the automatic mode can then rotate seats inward by 25 degrees to make a more lounge-like atmosphere. The ID. Pilot Relax mode also means seats can be adjusted individually and can even be reclined.

The ID. ROOMZZ features an 82-kWh battery and offers a range of 450km (WLTP) before recharging is necessary. It can also be charged to 80% of its capacity in around 30 minutes via fast charging.

Describing the vehicle, Klaus Bischoff, chief designer at Volkswagen, said: “This SUV is a monolith, appearing to be seamlessly machined from one solid block. The battery-powered ID. ROOMZZ moves effortlessly – silently and without emissions.”

The ID. ROOMZZ is not the only notable SUV to be debuted around Auto Shanghai, with Mercedes Benz also using the event as an opportunity to unveil its Concept GLB. The company regards the vehicle as an answer to whether there is space between the GLA and GLC in its SUV range.
