It was a car so streamlined that it could probably thread through the eye of a needle, and now the roof has been ripped off for the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet. This dramatic-looking electric super coupe concept has just been revealed at Monterey Car Week at Pebble Beach, California; a car this cool could only have been unveiled here.Like its fixed-roof sibling, the two-seater Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet uses an electric powertrain, producing the equivalent of 740bhp. With this much power going to all four wheels, it can dash to 62mph in under four seconds.Pace is nothing without range in the electric car world though, and the concept has plenty of that too, with a quoted range of more than 200 miles, while a new DC charging system can top that up by 60 miles in just five minutes. At almost six metres long and sitting on humongous 24-inch light-alloy wheels, the concept incorporates classic art deco design with its stretched-out bonnet and puristic, flowing lines. The design of its curved, sporty body is characterised by powerful structural elements in conjunction with the sharp feature line, which defines the upper vehicle body, from the radiator grille across the entire length of the vehicle through to the ‘boat tail’ rear, which recalls the deck of a luxury yacht. That yacht motif continues inside with an aptly futuristic-looking cabin splattered with crystal white nappa leather and contrasting dark paint finish.A light wing flows in a curve across the door trim and the centre tunnel into the seat landscape, creating a 360-degree open-air luxury lounge. Above, a display strip links the doors, dashboard and the rear area, while all display elements are integrated into the continuous glass trim part. It isn’t death-by-technology though, with classic round dials, such as the instrument cluster, being positioned prominently. These ‘hyperanalogue’ elements have been included in a bid to satisfy people’s demand for analogue luxury in an increasingly digital world.Gorden Wagener, Daimler’s chief design officer, believes the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet is “the perfect embodiment of our design strategy”.He added: “Breathtaking proportions combined with a luxurious “haute couture” interior help to create the ultimate experience.”What do you think of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet and its yacht theme? Is it a sinker or ‘aye aye, captain’?
