Vauxhall has unveiled its first-ever plug-in hybrid, the Grandland X Hybrid4, as part of the marque’s pledge to electrify its entire range by 2024.

The manufacturer hailed the Grandland X Hybrid4’s state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology, which incorporates a 200hp, 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection four-cylinder petrol engine alongside an electric drive system boasting two electric motors, capable of delivering a combined output 109hp.

In tandem, the petrol engine and electric motors produce up to 300hp, with a combined fuel consumption of 128mpg and 49g/km of CO2 emissions. The vehicle also features all-wheel drive (AWD) and a 13.2kWh lithium-ion battery.

Owners will be able to choose from four different driving modes – electric, hybrid, AWD and sport.

When being driven in full electric mode, the Grandland X offers a maximum range of 30 miles, while switching to hybrid allows the car to select the most efficient source of power. For instance, when driving in cities at low speed, it will automatically select electric mode for emission-free driving.

To further improve its efficiency, the Grandland X also boasts a regenerative braking system that can increase the vehicle’s electric range by as much as ten per cent.

Vauxhall also highlighted the car’s “fast, easy and convenient” charging system. It comes with a 3.3kW onboard charger, although an optional 6.6kW version is also available.

Fast-charging devices for use at public stations will also be offered, along with wall boxes for home charging. With a 7.4kW wallbox, the battery can be fully charged in less than two hours.
