It’s hard not to smile and instantly like the Mercedes G63 if you grew up on a diet of Daktari and Corgi toys, as it adheres to that traditional Landover box-shape that we know so well.

The Mercedes 4-wheel drive G-Class (G-Wagen) was first introduced as a military vehicle before being made available to the public in 1979. But G-Class has now sadly run its course it would seem, as the range will be celebrating its swansong with some desirable limited editions.

Mercedes AMG G63

Yes, Mercedes-AMG has recently announced that the G63 and the G65 will get some pampering treatments before they depart, and the old will give way to the new at next year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, where it is expected that Mercedes will reveal the replacement as a much lighter aluminium bodied 4×4.

So in the meantime, lovers of the G63 can get excited about an 850bhp tuned version thanks to Posaidon, the renowned German tuning company. Effectively, the G63 AMG has become the G63 RS 850 in their hands.

The standard twin-turbo V8 powered G63 is hardly lacking power, but the tuning provided by Posaidon will certainly prove a tantalising proposition. Not only will it pack 850bhp, but it will also have 995lb ft torque and a predicted 0-62mph of just 3.6 seconds – though how that will feel behind the wheel of a sit-up-and-beg 4×4 vehicle with a non-aerodynamic retro shape of a G63 is another matter entirely.

It’s not only hidden power that is being added, but some visible enhancements too. The G63 will get some carbon fibre dressing, a quilted leather interior with contrast stitching, plus gold brake calipers from the S63 AMG to stop those 22-inch alloys.

Exclusive Edition

The G63 and G65 will also get an Exclusive Edition with a unique grey paint finish and AMG racing stripes. The G63 version will get 21-inch alloys in matt black, while the G65 will also feature carbon-look wheel inserts. Both get an instrument panel dressed in 2-tone leather, which will match the similarly styled sports seats. 6 colour combinations will be on offer.

No power increases though. The G63’s 5.5 litre V8 produces 563bhp with 560lb ft torque, while the more extravagant G65 produces 621bhp and 737lb torque from its V12 engine.

While there is not much to go on regarding prices, you can expect the price of the G63 RS 850 to be as hefty as its 2.5 tonne weight. As for the Exclusive Edition, German announced prices translate to over £145,000 for the G63 and £256,000 for the G65 in pound sterling!
