Toyota has injected new life into the Prius without totally sacrificing the hybrid vehicle’s iconic silhouette. The new 2023 Prius looks modern, sophisticated and, dare we say, stylish.
The new 2023 Prius evolves the signature Prius shape that we’ve all become familiar with, replacing harsh, clunky angles with sweeping curves. Core to its advancements is the new second-generation TNGA-C platform, which offers a lower centre of gravity and facilitates the use of large 19-inch tyres. This ultimately results in a wider stance and, simply put, a much cooler-looking vehicle. From a driving perspective, the design changes allow for a nimble, more comfortable ride experience.
Toyota has also added reinforcements throughout the body to increase rigidity and keep the ride as quiet as possible. The use of MacPherson struts and a double wishbone arrangement at the front and rear is also said to have improved the Prius’ agility and responsiveness.
Despite the engineering upgrades and the stylish new aesthetic, this latest Prius rendition is still a Prius. Under the PHEV’s hood, you’ll find a 2.0-litre Dynamic Force Engine paired with a lithium-ion battery. Together, this setup is said to be capable of producing a maximum system output of 164kW whilst maintaining the same levels of fuel efficiency as the previous Prius model.
The 2.0-litre HEV variant’s maximum system output is 1.6 times higher than the previous model at 144kW. This version is also kitted out with the latest E-four AWD system for maximum traction in tricky situations. Toyota states that by employing the high-output motor, this model has improved uphill performance on low-friction road surfaces, as well as increased stability when turning.
It’s worth noting that the battery has been tucked underneath the rear seat, a design choice which helps maintain the vehicle’s low centre of gravity while also increasing cargo capacity.
Inside, Toyota has tried to create a spacious, low-stress environment that allows Prius owners to focus on driving. Toyota describes the interior as a balance between sporty and sophisticated, and we can see why. The Japanese automaker has favoured sleek black tones, pairing the simple colour palette with classy seat-stitching finishes to make for a clean and elegant look.
Toyota has also made safety a key priority, kitting out the 2023 Prius with a strong suite of driving support systems. Safety Sense, Toyota’s latest active safety package, comes as standard on all new Prius models and comprises of Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, and Adaptive Cruise Control, amongst other features. The vehicle is also fitted with cameras at the front and rear, and an in-vehicle drive recorder.
Unfortunately, the new Prius won’t be sold in the UK, with Toyota citing a growing preference for SUV-styled vehicles as the reason for its omission from the UK market.
